How cabinet refinishing works in a Charlotte kitchen
Cabinets take more wear than any wall in the house. They get grabbed with greasy hands, splashed at the sink and bumped by pots, and the finish near the handles goes first. That is why cabinet paint needs more prep than wall paint. A coat over grease or a glossy factory finish looks fine for a while and then chips at the edges.
The work starts with cleaning. Kitchen cabinets carry a film of cooking grease that paint will not stick to, so it has to come off. Then the surfaces are sanded to dull the old finish and give the new coat something to grip. Dents and gouges are filled. Primer goes on next, chosen to bond to whatever the cabinets are made of and finished with.
More about cabinet refinishing
Doors and drawer fronts are usually taken off and finished separately from the cabinet boxes. Laid flat, they can be sprayed for an even coat without runs, and both sides get done. Hardware comes off and is labeled so every door goes back where it came from. The boxes and face frames are painted in place, with counters, floors and appliances covered.
Paint or stain is the first decision. Paint covers the wood grain and gives you any color you want, which is why most kitchen updates go that way. Stain lets the grain show through and suits wood cabinets that are in good shape. We do both, for kitchens and for bathrooms, and color consultation is available if you are torn between options.
Bathroom vanities have a different problem: moisture. Steam from showers and water around the sink work into any edge where the finish has broken. Those spots need sealing and priming before the finish goes on. The same goes for the sink base in a kitchen, where leaks and spills sit on the bottom shelf.
We do not publish a cabinet figure in our price guide, because cabinet jobs vary so much: the number of doors and drawers, the material, the current finish, and whether you want paint or stain. The free estimate gives you the real number after we have seen the cabinets. Financing is available; ask about it when we meet.

Watch For These
Signs You Need Cabinet Refinishing
- Finish worn through near the handles and pulls
- Chips along door edges and drawer fronts
- A sticky film that cleaning no longer removes
- Water damage on the sink base or vanity edges
- Dated color or a stain tone that no longer fits the room
- Sound cabinet boxes you would rather keep than replace

Great experience having our cabinets and kitchen painted by Fine Finishes. Zachary, the owner, was quick to respond and excellent to communicate with. Our team, led by Mario, was efficient, neat, and did a wonderful job. Very happy with the way our kitchen turned out and would highly recommend Fine Finishes Custom painting!
We had a great experience with Zach and his team. Their pricing was more than fair and delivered on the quality of work. They did a creative paint design in our master bedroom and came out perfect. We will be using them again for more rooms in our house.
Wow, I’m so impressed with this painting group! I’ve had negative experiences in the past with other hired painters cutting corners, upcharging & delaying projects. This experience was not like that at all. It was a 10/10 experience. The customer service is professional, prompt & personable. I am impressed by how much attention to detail was shown on the job, leaving my walls & cabinets looking pristine. I’ll definitely be using this group time and time again!
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Cabinet Refinishing
How much does cabinet refinishing cost in Charlotte, NC?
Our published price guide does not list a cabinet figure. The cost depends on the number of doors and drawers, the cabinet material, the current finish and whether you choose paint or stain. The free estimate sets the real number after we see the cabinets.
Should I paint or stain my kitchen cabinets in Charlotte?
Paint covers the grain and opens up any color. Stain lets the wood grain show and suits wood cabinets in good condition. We do both, and color consultation is available if you want help deciding.
Do you refinish bathroom vanities in Mecklenburg County?
Yes. Cabinet refinishing covers bathrooms as well as kitchens. Vanities see steam and standing water, so damaged edges are sealed and primed before the finish goes on.
Is refinishing cheaper than replacing cabinets in North Carolina?
Refinishing changes the look without the cost of full replacement, as long as the cabinet boxes are sound. You keep your layout and countertops. If the boxes are failing, we will tell you at the estimate.
Why are cabinet doors removed for painting in Charlotte kitchens?
Doors laid flat can be sprayed for an even coat without runs, and both sides get finished. The boxes are painted in place. Hardware is labeled so every door goes back where it came from.
What paint do you use on cabinets around Charlotte, NC?
We use Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore. The primer and finish are chosen for the cabinet material and its current coating. We go through that at the estimate.
