Local Expertise

Serving the Matthews Community

  • A town on a ridge between two creeks

The center of Matthews sits on a ridge that drains north toward McAlpine Creek and south toward Fourmile Creek. Where a lot slopes, rain runs along the foundation and splashes back onto the lowest courses of siding and trim, and that is where exterior paint tends to lift first. We check those lower boards and the bottoms of door casings closely at the estimate. Wood that has taken on water has to dry out and be primed before new paint will hold.

  • Houses people stay in

At the 2020 census the median age in Matthews was 42.5, one in five residents was 65 or older, and the homeowner vacancy rate was 1.0 percent. If you have lived in your house for a while, the rooms collect nail holes, scuffs and old touch-ups in a mismatched sheen, so the prep counts as much as the paint. We patch, sand and prime those spots so the finished wall reads as one even color.

Local Conditions

Common Painting Challenges in Matthews, NC

Matthews grew from a stagecoach stop and a sawmill into a rail town, and today it is a suburb crossed by US 74, NC 51 and I-485. These are the problems we would look for first on a Matthews house.

  • Peeling at the bottom of the siding. Where a yard falls away toward McAlpine or Fourmile Creek, splash-back keeps the lowest boards wet. Paint there blisters and peels well before the rest of the wall.
  • Mildew on shaded walls. Charlotte-area summers are humid, and a north wall behind trees can stay damp long after a rain. Painting over mildew traps it, so we pressure wash and let the surface dry first.
  • Road film near the highways. US 74 is the main highway through Matthews, and I-485 crosses the south side of town with four interchanges. Houses close to heavy traffic collect a gray film that paint sticks to poorly, which is why washing comes before any exterior coat.
  • Worn trim, railings and doors. Front doors, railings and window trim take the most handling and weather. They often need scraping, sanding and priming even when the siding is still sound.
  • Patched, mismatched interior walls. Years of picture hooks, furniture scuffs and small touch-ups leave walls with dull and shiny patches. A full repaint over properly filled holes evens out the sheen.

Not sure which of these you have? We look at all of it during a free estimate in Matthews.

About the Area

All About Matthews, NC

Matthews started out with a blunt nickname. In the early 1800s the settlement was called Stumptown, for the tree stumps left after land was cleared for cotton fields. It was later named Fullwood after its postmaster, and a sawmill plus the cotton and timber trade turned it into a town.

The railroad renamed it. Before the first train arrived in December 1874, the town was a stagecoach stop between Charlotte and Monroe, and when it incorporated in 1879 it took the name of Edward Matthews, a director of the Central Carolina Railroad. Today US 74 is the main highway through town, running northwest into Charlotte and southeast to Monroe.

Matthews covers 17.2 square miles, and almost none of it is water. It borders Charlotte on two sides, Mint Hill to the northeast and Stallings in Union County to the southeast, with Uptown Charlotte 11 miles away. The ridge at the center of town sheds water both ways, north to McAlpine Creek and south to Fourmile Creek, and how water moves around a house decides where exterior paint fails first.

More about painting in Matthews

At the 2020 census Matthews had 29,435 residents and 12,156 housing units, with only 4.1 percent of them vacant. Inside a lived-in house the work tends to be the same list: walls and ceilings, trim and doors, kitchen cabinets, and drywall repair before paint.

One Google reviewer had a dining room painted a dark color under side lighting, the kind of job another company turned down because every flaw shows. That reviewer also noted that the person who gave the quote was the one leading the work on the day.

We had a great experience with Zach and his team. Their pricing was more than fair and delivered on the quality of work. They did a creative paint design in our master bedroom and came out perfect. We will be using them again for more rooms in our house.

Wow, I’m so impressed with this painting group! I’ve had negative experiences in the past with other hired painters cutting corners, upcharging & delaying projects. This experience was not like that at all. It was a 10/10 experience. The customer service is professional, prompt & personable. I am impressed by how much attention to detail was shown on the job, leaving my walls & cabinets looking pristine. I’ll definitely be using this group time and time again!

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions: Painting in Matthews, NC

Do you paint houses in Matthews, NC?

Yes. Matthews is one of the towns in our service area, and we reach it from Charlotte on US 74 and from Mint Hill on NC 51. We paint interiors, exteriors and cabinets, and we take commercial work such as offices and retail spaces. The first visit is a free estimate with no obligation.

How much does interior painting cost in Matthews?

Our published price guide lists walls only at $2.75 to $6.00 per square foot, and walls with ceilings and trim at $3.50 to $7.00 per square foot. A full home of 2,000 square feet runs $5,500 to $12,000 in that guide. Where your house lands depends on its condition and the prep it needs, which is what the free estimate is for.

Why is the paint peeling near the ground on my Matthews house?

Low peeling usually comes from water. Rain that splashes off a walkway or runs down a sloped yard keeps the bottom boards wet, and the paint lets go. We scrape and dry the wood, prime it, and then repaint. If the wood has rotted, we point that out at the estimate.

Do you have a recorded painting job in Matthews?

Not one we can name yet. The job in our reviews that is tied to a town is next door in Mint Hill, where the museum buildings at the Carl J. McEwen Village were repaired and painted or stained for the Mint Hill Historical Society. Our other reviews describe kitchens, dining rooms and bedrooms without naming a town.

Can you paint kitchen cabinets in a Matthews home?

Yes. We paint or stain kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Cabinet doors are commonly taken off and finished flat so the coat levels out and the hinges stay clean, while the boxes are prepped and painted in place. One reviewer described the crew that painted her kitchen cabinets as efficient and neat.

Is financing available for painting in Matthews?

Financing is available. We do not publish the terms here, so ask about them when we come out for the estimate.
